The rules behind the answer

  • Repair costs more than 50% of a new AC: replace.
  • AC over 8 years old: use 30% instead of 50%.
  • R22 gas: lean towards replacing. The gas is phased out in India.
  • AC under 6 years old: repair, unless the coil or compressor is badly damaged.
