How we calculate

Monthly bill = units per hour × hours per day × 30 × rate per unit. We use the higher tariff slab, because most homes with an AC cross it in summer. Change the rate to the figure on your own bill for a closer result.

Three ways to cut the AC bill

  1. Clean the filters every 2 weeks in summer. A blocked filter can add 10 to 15% to the bill.
  2. Keep the outdoor unit in shade with free airflow. Do not cover it.
  3. Set 25 or 26°C. Use the sleep mode at night.

Common questions

›How many units does a 1.5 ton AC use per hour?

A 1.5 ton 5-star inverter AC uses about 1 to 1.1 units per hour in an Indian summer. A 3-star non-inverter AC uses about 1.5 units. Old ACs use 1.8 units or more.

›What is the monthly bill for a 1.5 ton AC running 8 hours a day?

At ₹6 per unit: about ₹1,500 a month for a 5-star inverter and about ₹2,200 for a 3-star non-inverter.

›Does 1 degree on the thermostat change the bill?

Yes. Each degree below 24°C adds about 6% to the AC bill. Set 25 or 26°C and use the ceiling fan on low.

›Why is my real bill higher than this?

Dirty filters, low gas, a hot outdoor unit in direct sun, or an AC that is too small for the room all raise the bill. Higher tariff slabs also apply when the whole house uses more power.
